In July 5, 1912 in aviation history: the first military aviators named. Army pilots Captain Charles Chandler, 2nd Lt. Thomas D. Milling, and 2nd Lt. Henry “Hap” Arnold received their Military Aviator Certificates. This 1912 photo shows Captain Chandler (left) holding a Lewis Gun in a Wright Model B Flyer after the first successful firing of a machine gun from an airplane.

Young 2nd Lt. Henry “Hap” Arnold flew the Wright Model B Flyer, later becoming one of the first attack Aeroplane pilots.  The young Lieutenant decided to make a career out of the Army and later was to become the “Father” of the United States Air Force…
