The 12 Engine Dornier DOX Flying Boat

The Dornier Do X was the largest, heaviest, and most powerful flying boat in the world when it was produced by the Dornier company of Germany in 1929. First conceived by Dr. Claudius Dornier in 1924,[1] planning started in late 1925 and after over 240,000 work hours it was completed in June 1929.[2] Only the Tupolev ANT-20 Maxim Gorki Russian landplane of a few years later was physically larger between the two World Wars, but was not as heavy as the Do X, at 53 metric tons maximum takeoff weight versus the Do X’s 56 tonnes.

The Do X was financed by the German Transport Ministry and built in a specially designed plant at Altenrhein, on the Swiss portion of Lake Constance, in order to circumvent the Treaty of Versailles which forbade any aircraft exceeding set speed and range limits to be built in Germany after World War I.

  1. Maybe my favorite airplane of all time. It was the Airbus A380 of it’s day. It refueled in the Atlantic from a ship when it was running from Germany to Argentina. Sometimes it was so heavily loaded it would have to step taxi for miles to burn enough fuel off to lighten up and get into ground effect. I would have loved to have made one trip in this big boy. Man! What an airplane.

    Also, one of my favorite airplanes, in fact, I have two models hanging above my head right now of the DOX–There were four built, two sold to the Italian Air Force — the one that flew the Atlantic was destroyed in bombing during WW II. The others were also destroyed, nothing left.

    The DO X was either the lirst modern plane or the last primitive one. Nothing like it before or after.
    No wind tunnel, streamlining or any of the advantages of today. Just horsepower. The connection to the Zeppelinwerk is obvious, especially in the stand-up engineering room.
